Awesome but Challenging Hike up Mt Elbert! Even though I trained with 10–12-mile hikes in the Smoky Mountains to prepare for this 11-mile hike, I was challenged by the low oxygen levels at the high elevation. However, Nathan (my guide) was very conscious of my limits (age 71) and adjusted to my pace and offered continual encouragement. He KNOWS these mountains and roads. He drove us to the remote trailhead over a very rough backroad. From there we started the hike. Nearly 5,000 ft elevation gain (argh) and then down (Yea, sorta, until my thighs wanted to say stop!). The views from the top are awesome as well on the way up and down. I wholeheartedly recommend Aspen Expeditions and Nate.
